Nelson

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts will likely have All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson back on the field against the 49ers on Sunday night, but it’s not looking good for T.Y. Hilton after the wide receiver injured his quadriceps late in last week’s win over the Texans.

An Indianapolis team that has battled injuries all season has already ruled out right tackle Braden Smith (foot), cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle), defensive end Kemoko Turay (groin), running back Jordan Wilkins (illness) and free safety Julian Blackmon, who tore his Achilles tendon in practice earlier this week.

Blackmon will not return this season, but the Colts are likely waiting to officially place the free safety on injured reserve until the team brings Nelson back off injured reserve, a move that could happen on Saturday.

Nelson, who has missed the past three games due to a high ankle sprain suffered against the Titans, has looked good in his return to practice this week.

“He handled it well, he looked good,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said. “I expect all systems will be go.”

Hilton has not practiced this week, but Indianapolis is listing the veteran wideout as questionable, given his history of playing without practicing.

“We’re not going to rule him out, we’re going to evaluate it tomorrow,” Reich said. “It’s probably not likely that he’s gonna go, but I’m not going to rule it out just yet. … We pushed it today a little bit to see if he was close, and because it’s T.Y., we just want to wait one more day before making any determination.”

NFL Week 7 picks, predictions: Colts, 49ers to meet in a swamp

Indianapolis was forced to rule out Smith for the sixth consecutive game, but the Colts did get good news on the right tackle, whose recovery from a strained foot has taken much longer than Indianapolis initially expected — the Colts initially thought Smith had a chance to return within three weeks.

The good news now is that Smith returned to practice for the first time since the season opener. Even if he’s out this week, a return to action is clearly close.

From what Reich said, it sounds as if Wilkins is also close to returning to the field after missing three weeks due to an illness the Colts have been reluctant to disclose. Reich declined to offer any details again on Friday, although he did project some optimism about the running back’s return.

“I think we’ll see him back at practice next week,” Reich said.

There is also a chance that wide receiver Parris Campbell will return this season after going through surgery on the foot injury he suffered while catching a 51-yard touchdown pass last week.

“It’s two to three months, they’re saying,” Reich said. “If you do the math on eight weeks, there’s still a few weeks to go in the regular season. Certainly not going to rule that out. I think Parris is of the mindset that he’s going to work hard, and we’ll just see how it plays out.”
