For three quarters, Friday’s game between West Charlotte and Myers Park was a close affair.

But in the fourth quarter, Myers Park held West Charlotte to 1-of-18 shooting and ran away with a 59-46 win at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge.

Myers Park, ranked No. 6 in the Sweet 16, outscored No. 2 West Charlotte 17-6 in the final period.

The Lions got a big performance from Landon King (27 points, seven rebounds, two steals) but no other West Charlotte player had more than Donovan Raymond’s nine points.

Myers Park had a lot more balance.

The Mustangs got 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks from Elijah Strong; 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals from Sir Muhammad; and 12 points, 11 rebounds from Sam Walters.

Friday’s #BIG5 Top Performers

Jordan Crawford, North Mecklenburg: 36 points, four assists, four steals for the College of Charleston signee in a win over East Meck at the Leroy Holden Classic.

Zion McDuffie, Butler: 26 points, five steals, four rebounds in a 65-63 overtime win over West Cabarrus.

Xavier McKelvy, United Faith: 31 points, six rebounds, four assists in a 86-83 win over Gaston Day. Gaston Day’s Evan Montanari had 38 points, six rebounds and four assists and made 9-of-13 3-point shots.

Senali Moss, South Mecklenburg girls: 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals, five assists in a 50-40 win over Charlotte Christian at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge.

Quay Watson, Hopewell: 28 points, five rebounds, five assists in a 78-76 win over Berry. Watson made 10-of-15 field goals, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

CHARLOTTE HOOPS CHALLENGE ROUNDUP

Butler 65, West Cabarrus 63 OT: Zion McDuffie had 26 points, five steals and four rebounds to help Butler survive West Cabarrus in overtime. Butler trailed 33-29 at halftime and the teams played evenly after that. West Cabarrus got 18 points, six rebounds, five assists from Trey Minard and 17 points from Joseph Serra.

Combine Academy 84, Concord Academy 64: The Goats ran away from Concord Academy, outrebounding the smaller Concord team 41-25. Combine got 20 points, seven rebounds from Virginia Tech recruit Patrick Wessler. Langston Boyd, a sophomore Power 5 recruit, had 16 points for Combine.

Hopewell 78, Berry 76: Quay Watson had 28 points, five rebounds and five assists, and made 5-of-8 3-point attempts, to lift Hopewell to a close win. Hopewell led by 10 going into the fourth quarter before Berry made a push, sparked by Josh Stevenson (24 points, six rebounds).

Myers Park girls 65, Shelby 64 OT: In a battle of two of the region’s top teams, Myers Park outlasted the reigning N.C. 2A state champions, overcoming 17 turnovers. Reese Wilson (19 points), Mix Xerras (16 points, seven assists) and Jerin Truesdale (14 points, nine rebounds) had big games for Myers Park. Maraja Pass had 23 points, eight rebounds, five steals and five assists for Shelby.

South Meck girls 50, Charlotte Christian 40: The Sabres were down 18-7 after the first quarter but outscored Christian 41-8 in the next two quarters to win easily. Senali Moss had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists for the Sabres. Christian’s Nora Schroeder had 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

South Meck 70, Cannon School 53: The Sabres upset preseason Sweet 16 No. 9 Cannon School, the two-time NCISAA 4A champions. Cannon was playing without starting point guard Austin Swartz, who is injured. South Meck used a zone defense that Cannon couldn’t solve. The Cougars shot just 3-of-24 from 3-point range and 34.5 percent overall. Karon Boyd had 27 points, nine rebounds for Cannon. South Meck’s Sincere Rasul (14 points, four steals), Jacob Newman (11 points, four assists), Pete Moye (15 points, eight rebounds) and Bishop Boswell (18 points, 10 rebounds) all hit double figures for the Sabres.

United Faith 86, Gaston Day 83: Falcons senior Xavier McKelvy had 31 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead his team to a narrow win. Gaston Day’s Evan Montanari had 38 points, six rebounds and four assists. He made 9-of-13 3-point attempts.

Westminster Catawba 56, Grace Christian 47: MJ Collins, a Virginia Tech signee, and Richard Black III combined for 28 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists in the win. Westminster trailed by nine after the first quarter, when it gave up 20 points. In the final three quarters, Grace Christian scored 26.

York Prep 48, Providence Day 41: York Prep forced 22 turnovers and forced Providence Day into 33 percent shooting for the game. The Chargers made just 16.7 percent of their fourth-quarter attempts. York Prep got 15 points, six rebounds from Brenton Elliott.
